This is out soon - end of the month, for a very reasonable price of £50. I want one. I'm getting one. Here's the vids, for anyone who wants to avoid the boring babble that follows:
Sounded like a fun toy, until its applications for multi-tracking became apparent:
Comparisons with the Stylophone are obvious as one plays it via the touch-strip, but the Korg has something a bit special in it, well, three things:
- a genuine VCO (voltage controlled oscillator), which old analogue synths used as their 'voice' - an all-analogue VCF (voltage controlled filter, which Korg say is using the same circuitry as their ancient MS-10 & MS-20 synths) - an LFO (low frequency oscillator), which can be used to modulate the VCO for vibrato effects or the filter for 'swish-swish' effects.
You can run external signals through the filter, too! What's significant about this, is that it's one of the 'big three' (Yamaha, Roland and Korg) has produced an analogue instrument, albeit a simple one. Analogue synths are (as lovely as they sound) obsolete technology - expensive to produce and a bit of a 'niche' product.
It's tantalising to think that Korg are 'testing the waters' here - who knows, it this takes off, could it see a full-blown synth thrown back into production?! Probably not, given the costs/market, but it's certainly a glimmer of hope!
